The Tuba City Lady Warriors defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 47-45 in a 3A North Region basketball game played in Winslow on Tuesday. The win improved Tuba City’s record 17-7 for the season. Winslow fell to 14-10 for the season and 4-5 in the region. The loss was Winslow’s sixth in a row.
Winslow built an impressive first period lead of 17-9, but saw that margin cut to a two point, 24-22 advantage by the half. The Lady Bulldogs moved back in front in the third quarter 37-33 only to see the Lady Warriors score the first nine points of the final period to move ahead. Both teams shot poorly from the charity stripe, as Tuba City hit just nine of 20 attempts and Winslow was eight of 16.
Mattea Begaii was the game high scorer with 17 points for Winslow, but was the only Lady Bulldog in double figures. Christine Becenti scored 13 for Tuba City, and was the only Lady Warrior in double digits.
The Lady Bulldogs were slated to journey to Window Rock on Thursday for a rematch with the Lady Scouts. They will host the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners tonight (Feb. 4) in the final game of the regular season. Both of those teams contributed to the Winslow losing streak.
