A Second Mesa man died last weekend after being struck by a commercial van in Flagstaff.
At 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, officers of the Flagstaff Police Department arrived on scene of a severe traffic accident in the area of East Route 66 and Ponderosa Parkway. The accident involved a large commercial van and a pedestrian.
The driver of the van stated she was traveling east on East Route 66 when a subject dressed in dark clothing emerged from the south side of the roadway and attempted to cross the roadway northbound. The driver explained the subject appeared quickly in front of her vehicle, at which time she struck the subject before she had time to stop.
The pedestrian was later identified as Leroy Honyaktewa, 50. He died of his injuries on Feb. 20 at Flagstaff Medical Center.
FPD Sgt. James Jackson noted earlier this week that alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time, but the incident is still under investigation.
