The Pima Community College Lady Aztecs of Tucson have finished the regular season as the NJCAA Region I Division II Women’s Basketball Champions with a record of 26-06.
Going into their regional championship as the No. 1 seed allowed them to host the first round. On March 1, they defeated Phoenix College 83-60, and then met Mesa Community College a few days later. The Lady Aztecs were victorious in defeating the Lady Thunderbirds, 61-37. The win gave the Lady Aztecs a No. 1 seed into the NJCAA National Women’s Basketball Championship, which opened Tuesday and continues through Sunday, March 20, in Peoria, Ill. They will be one of the top 16 teams in the country to compete for the national title.
One member of the Lady Aztecs is freshman guard Paige Shirley of Dilkon. Currently, the lone Native American student on the Pima women’s basketball roster, she is a 2010 graduate of Winslow High School. During her four-year stint at Winslow, Paige helped the Lady Bulldogs to win Class 3A State Championships in 2008 and 2010, and place as runner-up in 2007 and 2009. She is studying nursing at PCC, and was named to the dean’s list in academics.
