The Winslow High School golf team was one of 16 teams playing in the Safford Invitational Golf Tournament last Saturday. Desert Christian won the tournament with a low team score of 151. Snowflake was second at 157, followed by Blue Ridge and Show Low tied at 162. Payson at 165 and Safford at 168 also turned in excellent rounds. Winslow finished 14th at 214.
The best individual round went to Kyle Jones of Snowflake with a low score of 72. Tied for second behind Jones at 74 were Caleb Ferganchick of Desert Christian, George Vlassis of Safford and Zack Chee of Chinle.
Winslow’s David Aberle shot an excellent round of 79, which earned him a tie for the eighth best individual score.
The entire Desert Christian team shot under 80, led by Ferganchick’s 74. Other scores from his team members were Jon Goswitz at 75, and Nathan Anderson and Buddy Burr at 79, tied with Aberle of Winslow and Austin Smith of Safford for eighth place.
Other golfers who shot 80 or less were Dillon Washburn of Blue Ridge and Tyler Apps of Payson at 77, and Jake Washburn of Blue Ridge, Jeffery Kelley of Payson and Jake Shaver of Wilcox at 80.
The rest of the Winslow golfers and their scores were Brandon Little at 114, Joshua Vargas at 130, Kassandra Grabowski at 131 and Lane Conner at 149.
