Verna Mae “Pinky” Thompson, 49, passed away on Monday, April 4, 2011, in Avondale. Graveside services were held April 8 at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
Pinky got her name the minute she was born to Esther and Thomas Thompson Sr. on June 6, 1961, in Winslow when a nurse said, “She is pink.” Everyone knew her as “Pinky” from that day on.
She had a unique laugh, a love for playing Navajo shoe games, card games and cooking, and she was always willing to help others.
Survivors include her loving companion, Xavier Valenzuela, who took great care of her until the end, loving her and never leaving her side; two sisters, Loretta “Dixie” Thompson (John Willie) and Tina Todacheenie (Alvin); two brothers, Thomas Thompson Jr. (Matilda) and Arnold J. Thompson (Patricia McCabe); her mother, Esther Thompson; three daughters, Pamela (Jason), Audrey and Charonda; and three grandsons whom she adored, Benjamin, Valentino and Lucion.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Thompson Sr.; and her beloved first companion and father of her daughters, Ben Johnson Jr.
