The Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook are heading into the 3A North Regional Softball Tournament on a three-game winning streak after taking two from Chinle last Wednesday and closing out the regular season with an easy win over Ganado the following day.

Playing a doubleheader at Chinle, the Lady Birds led 7-3 through six innings, but in the top of the seventh they exploded for 12 runs and closed out the Lady Wildcats in six innings with a 19-3 victory.

Kellin Bakurza worked all six innings in the circle, facing 25 batters. She earned the win, giving up just three runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.

At the plate Bakurza went zero for three, but walked twice and reached once on an error. She had two RBIs and scored three runs. Erin Aragon was two for four with a stolen base and scored three runs. PJ Gabaldon went four for four with two stolen bases, an RBI and scored three times. Aaren Billie was two for five with a double, two RBIs and scored twice. Shantina Kinlicheenie went two for four and scored once. Jessica Paz was three for five with an RBI, stole two bases and scored two runs. Alizia Foster went two for five, walked twice, stole one base and scored a run. Sheriesse Thomas went three for five with two RBIs and scored twice. Cherokee Yellowhair was three for four with a double, five RBIs and scored two runs.

The second game was closer, but the Lady Birds were again victorious, winning the game 19-13.

Chinle led 7-4 through two innings, but Holbrook rallied to tie the game at 7-all then led 8-7 midway through the fifth inning. The Lady Wildcats played well, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a five run lead over Holbrook. The Lady Roadrunners answered with a big sixth inning, pushing in nine runs, then closed out the win with two more in the seventh.

Holbrook pounded out 19 hits in the game led by Aragon, who went four for six with a triple, a stolen base, three RBIs and scored four times. Gabaldon was two for four with a walk, stole one base and scored three runs. Billie went one for five with an RBI and scored once. Kinlicheenie was zero for four, but reached three times on errors and scored three runs. Bakurza was two for four, walked and scored once. Paz went three for six with three RBIs and scored once. Foster had a big game, going three for five with a triple, a double, a stolen base, three RBIs and scored two runs. Janecia Nez was one for two with a triple, walked twice, had an RBI and scored two runs. Tess Baldonado went one for one and scored a run. Yellowhair was two for five with a sacrifice, two RBIs and scored once.

Nez worked five innings, facing 30 batters. She gave up 13 runs, 11 earned, on 10 hits with 5 strikeouts and 4 walks. Bakurza closed out the final two innings, facing just 8 batters. She allowed no runs on just one hit with three strikeouts.

Holbrook wrapped up the regular season with a solid 22-1 five-inning road win at Ganado on Thursday. The Lady Birds were in control of the game early with four first inning runs, then added nine in the second.

Bakurza pitched well in the circle, working three innings against just 11 batters. She gave up no hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks. Baldonado pitched two innings and faced 10 batters. She allowed one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

At the plate 10 players had at least one hit in the win. Aragon went two for five with a triple, an RBI and scored twice. Gabaldon was four for four with a triple, a stolen base, three RBIs and scored three runs. Billie was one for three with two RBIs and scored a run. Toni Craig went zero for one, but walked, stole one base and scored a run. Kinlicheenie was two for three with a triple, three RBIs and scored twice. Bakurza went one for two, reached once on an error, walked three times and scored five runs. Paz went one for four with two RBIs and scored twice. Foster was three for four and scored three runs. Thomas went two for two with three RBIs and scored twice. Baldonado went one for one with a double and two RBIs. Yellowhair was one for four with an RBI and scored once.

With the three wins the Lady Roadrunners close out the regular season with an overall mark of 10-14 and they were 5-4 in North Region play. After facing fifth seeded Chinle, this time at home, on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A North Region Tournament, the fourth seeded Lady Roadrunners will face the top seeded Lady Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29, in Winslow. Regardless of the outcome this week, the Lady Birds will be headed to the state tournament as the 15th overall seed and will most likely face second ranked Estrella Foothills in the opening round.
