Jesse Anthony “Tony” Serio, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at his home in Dyersburg, Tenn. The cause of death was a head injury due to a fall. Graveside services were held May 10 at Rehoboth Cemetery, with Rev. Johnny Michael officiating.
Anthony was born on June 27, 1927, in Camden, Ark. He graduated from Fairview High School in 1945.
He graduated from Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., with a bachelor’s degree in education, and received master’s degrees from Memphis State College and Peabody College (Vanderbilt).
As an educator, he taught school in Mt. Holly and Leachville, Ark., before moving to Holbrook. He was in the field of education for 36 years. He also taught college courses at Northern Arizona University, Northland Pioneer College and Eastern Arizona College.
He was also involved in civic organizations. He was a life member of the Lions Club, and was an Elk and a Mason. He served on the Holbrook Planning and Zoning Commission for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Peggy Clay Serio; his son, William Serio of RoEllen, Tenn.; his daughter, Carla Curran (Kevin) and grandson Sean Curran of Kingman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christine Kirkemier Serio and Sam Serio Sr.; a brother, Sam Serio Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Frances Wentz and Tenye May Mizell.

Johnson-Williams Funeral Home of Newbern, Tenn., was in charge of the arrangements.
