The Estrella Foothills Lady Wolves defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 7-5 in a wild Arizona State Softball Championship Game played on Saturday at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. The win reversed the results from 2010 when Winslow edged the Lady Wolves for the championship and was only Winslow’s second loss to an Arizona team this season, both to Estrella Foothills. The other loss was in the Payson Invitational Tournament championship game. The loss ended Winslow’s season with a 31-6 record.

Estrella Foothills took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on three walks and a single by Karen Gifford. Winslow tied the score in the bottom of the second on a single by Jaleisa Hayes, a wild pitch, a run scoring ground out by Taylor Baca and a single by Becca Perez. The Lady Wolves went up 2-1 in the top of the third on an error, a walk and a run scoring single by Lenora Bradfford.

The Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Jaleisa Hayes singled, Megan Lymer walked and both scored on a triple by Perez, who scored on a single by Gabby Stacey.

Estrella Foothills tied the game in the top of the fifth on five hits. Ashley Godfrey led off with a double, but was thrown out trying to steal third. Tatum Reedy, Kasia Smith, Bradfford and Gifford all singled to tie the game. The Lady Wolves had a bigger sixth inning when they scored three runs on four hits to take a 7-4 lead. Morgan Brown and Sarah Trammel singled and scored on a double by Godfrey, who scored on a single by Smith.

Winslow had opportunities in the final two innings, scoring in the sixth to cut the lead to the eventual final 7-5. Perez singled, there was an error and Stacey singled in that frame. The Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t bring home a run.

Halle Hayes took the loss, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five-plus innings. Mallory Smith worked two innings in relief and gave up no runs on one hit while fanning two.

Smith went the distance for Estrella Foothills and gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on 11 hits and one walk. She fanned three.

Jaleisa Hayes and Perez were each three for four for Winslow, with Perez having a triple. Mireya Ulibarri was two for four. Arianna Huerta was one for two. Gabby Stacey was one for three and Halle Hayes was one for four.

Godfrey and Bradfford were each two for three for Estrella Foothills, with both of Godfrey’s hits being doubles. Gifford and Smith were each two for four. Reedy was one for two. Trammel was one for three. Morgan Brown and C.J. Broadbent were each one for four.
