Former Northland Pioneer College basketball coach Mark Slessinger moved up in the coaching ranks when he was recently hired as the head coach for the University of New Orleans men’s basketball team.

Slessinger, a native of Bloomington, Ind., came to NPC in 1998 and spent three years with the college, first under Coach Richard Zalenski and the last two as head coach. His teams posted a 36-25 record, with eight players signing on at the Division I level before he departed to join the staff at Northwestern State University. He remained there for 11 years before accepting the offer from UNO.

“Becoming the head coach at UNO is a culmination of a lifelong dream to be an NCAA head coach,” stated Slessinger. “UNO is a university storied in tradition and history, and I welcome the challenge of bringing success back to the basketball program.”

“I am very proud of Mark,” said Zalenski. “He is a fine coach and a quality person.”
