Gloria Ann McCafferty O’Neal, 68, of Carlsbad, N.M., died unexpectedly from heart failure on Monday, July 11, 2011. Funeral services were held July 16 at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Needville, Texas, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Schwartz officiating. Burial followed in the IUCC Cemetery in Needville. Serving as pallbearers were Otto “Sonny” Hackstedt, Brian Hackstedt, Glenn Schroeder Sr., Jeff Chapman, John Chapman and Leighton McCafferty.
Gloria was born Aug. 24, 1942, in Rosenberg, Texas, to Robert McCafferty Sr. and Martha Hackstedt McCafferty.
Gloria (also known as Chicken, Maki, Mom and Nana) enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and being with her friends. She loved George Strait and was an avid Spurs fan. A giving person, she was always a friend when you needed one.
After starting her family in Carlsbad, Maki lived in Eastland, Texas, and Holbrook. In her final years, she returned to Carlsbad, where she enjoyed her many friends.
She was loved by all who crossed her path.
Survivors include her two sons, Kenneth “Kenny” O’Neal and his wife, Becky, of Helotes, Texas, and Jody O’Neal of Huachuca City; five granddaughters, Heather O’Neal of Florence, Sarah Macri of Clark Mills, N.Y., Alysha Piperata of Globe, Abigail O’Neal of Navarre, Fla., and Rachel O’Neal of Helotes; five great-granddaughters, Rylee, Taeler and Braelynn Jackson, Anna Macri and Lyne Piperata; two brothers, Bobby and Rod McCafferty, both of Needville; and countless friends across the Southwest.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Martha Hackstedt McCafferty.
Her memory will be honored by donating to the American Heart Association, 10060 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, Texas 77054.
