The Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook High have eight seniors on their volleyball roster, joined by two juniors and two sophomores. With that many veteran players, Coach Leslie Baldonado has to have high hopes for this year’s team. “We are looking forward to our season and to actually start playing. With the new re-alignment we will still see some tough teams on our schedule, and with the eight seniors we are hoping the experience and aggressiveness comes through. We should be a tough team to beat,” said the coach.
Veterans Kellin Bakurza, Bethany Baldwin, Janecia Nez, Shantina Kinlicheenie, Aaren LaRose and Maria Garcia are joined by newcomer Tiffany Haskie as the elder statesmen of the group. Juniors Corazon Alvarado and Samantha Smith, and sophomores Tess Baldonado and Shandie Demuth round out the team.
Assisting Baldonado will be junior varsity coach Kelly Buckwalter. Players on that team at this point include Cydney Walters, Brandi Baldwin, Danelle Massey, Demi Phaturos, Dena Kinlicheenie, Teyah Goldtooth, Auburn Dush, Brooke Hancock, Dominique James, Terrilyn Lester, Summer Charley, Kaynasa Curley, Alizia Foster, Eriene Haskie, Cierra Shumway and Lexi Moody.
Coach Cheryl Carlson will again be in charge of the freshman team, which includes Mariah Cummings, Candace Suttle, Charity Noline, Brooklyn Barela, Daviana Reyes, Lauren Silversmith, Rochelle Nez, Ashley Attakai and Tillethea Kelly.
Holbrook will host a scrimmage with three other schools on Friday, Aug. 26, then open the season at home against Window Rock on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Just one day later the Lady Birds will host another good team when Blue Ridge comes to town.
