The Winslow Bulldogs remain undefeated after earning a 47-12 victory over the Wildcats at Chinle on Friday. The win improved Winslow’s record to 5-0 and dropped Chinle to 3-2 for the season.
The game was close for the first half, but the Bulldogs scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game out of sight.
The Winslow defense got the first score when Henry Montiel intercepted a Wildcat pass and ran it back 35 yards to the end zone. Jonathan Oso booted the conversion for a 7-0 lead with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter.
Chinle got on the scoreboard on a 77-yard pass from Anton Wheeler to Rain Brady on its next possession. The Wildcats had been inside their own 10 yard line early in the possession. The conversion pass failed and Winslow led 7-6.
The Bulldog defense avoided disaster by holding Chinle without a first down after losing a fumble on the kickoff following the Wildcat touchdown. Chinle held until James Martinez hit Brennen James on a fourth down, 22-yard scoring pass. Oso booted the conversion for a 14-6 lead with just over two minutes left in the period and that was still the score when the quarter ended.
Martinez hit Montiel for an apparent touchdown on a 16-yard pass, but the score was negated by a penalty. Martinez then hit James for another score with a 25-yard pass. The conversion increased the lead to 21-6 with over nine minutes left in the half.
Chinle threatened again and had a first and goal at the Winslow three yard line, but turned the ball over on downs late in the first half. The Wildcats still managed to score and cut the lead to 21-12 at the end of the half. The score came on a nine-yard pass from Wheeler to Stewart Yazzie, but the conversion pass failed and Winslow still had a nine-point edge at the intermission.
Martinez teamed up with James for their third touchdown aerial on a 12-yard pass early in the third quarter. The successful conversion increased the lead to 28-12. Midway through the third period Martinez hit Montiel on a two-yard scoring pass that gave the Bulldogs a 34-12 lead after the conversion kick was blocked.
Martinez hit Montiel on a nine-yard scoring pass to increase the lead to 41-12 with two and a half minutes left in the third quarter. Martinez hit Caleb Layden with a 10-yard pass for pay dirt in the closing seconds of the third quarter. The conversion failed and Winslow led 47-12 going into the final quarter.
The Winslow reserves played the fourth period, which was scoreless as the Bulldogs won the game 47-12.
The Winslow junior varsity team defeated the Chinle jayvees 50-6 on Thursday at Winslow.
The Bulldogs will face their toughest challenge of the season when they meet the Lobos at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, in Snowflake. The Lobos defeated the St. Johns Redskins by a touchdown, 21-15, on Friday and are 4-1 for the season. The Lobos defeated Holbrook 61-0 in their opener, then thumped the Alchesay Falcons 49-8, but lost to the tough Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 24-7 at Lakeside. A big 28-15 win over the defending state champion Show Low Cougars showed the power of the Lobos.
