The Lady Roadrunners of Holbrook picked up a critical road win at Coconino last Thursday, but failed to carry any of that momentum over to the Snowflake Tournament played on the weekend, posting just one win in six matches.

Thursday’s match was a big power point win for the Lady Birds as they bounced back from a first game 25-18 loss to win the next three and the match 25-13, 25-20 and 25-18.

In the win, Kellin Bakurza had 21 assists and eight digs, and served an ace. Corazon Alvarado helped with five digs. Bethany Baldwin was strong with 17 kills, six digs and five blocks, and served two aces. Shantina Kinlicheenie played well with four kills, 18 assists, 17 digs and a block. Janecia Nez added four kills, an assist, nine digs and two blocks. Tess Baldonado also played well with 17 kills, an assist, seven digs and two blocks. Aaren LaRose added two kills, served an ace and had 22 digs. Samantha Smith had three kills, two assists and three digs. Shandie Demuth finished with two kills, an assist and a dig.

Competing in the Snowflake tournament on Friday and Saturday, the Holbrook squad lost all three pool play matches, then went just 1-2 in tournament bracket play.

In pool play Holbrook fell to Mogollon, 25-21 and 25-19. The Lady Birds then dropped two to Safford, 26-24 and 25-21. In an exhibition match they dropped two to Snowflake, 25-14 and 25-12.

In bracket play Holbrook defeated San Carlos in two, 25-5 and 25-18, then fell for a third time to Snowflake in two games, 25-19 and 25-11. In their final tournament match the Lady Birds faced a healthy Blue Ridge team, which beat them in three games, 25-25, 21-25 and 15-6.

Over the course of the tournament, Bakurza had two kills, 46 assists, three aces and 17 digs. Nez ended with nine kills, an assist and 11 digs. Baldwin added 33 kills, two assists, 10 digs and five blocks. Kinlicheenie finished with 11 kills, 36 assists, 25 digs and a block. Smith added seven kills, two assists and 13 digs. Baldonado racked up 25 kills, 13 digs and a block. LaRose finished with four kills, an assist, an ace and 32 digs. Alvarado helped with six kills, an assist, an ace, 13 digs and a block. Maria Garcia added two assists and nine digs. Demuth finished with five kills, six assists and 10 digs. Tiffany Haskie had a kill and two assists.

Holbrook’s overall record stands at 14-19 on the season. In the more important power point contests, the Lady Birds’ record is 5-4.
