Holbrook swept both games against Grand Canyon over the weekend, winning a close game on Friday night, then shutting the Phantoms out on Saturday morning.
Holbrook pulled out to a comfortable lead Friday night, but eventually the Phantoms forced overtime before the Birds prevailed by a final of 4-3. Robert Jaquez scored Holbrook’s first goal, then 10 minutes later RJ Alvarado added a second. Holbrook pushed the lead to 3-0 following Giuseppe Tambre’s goal later in the first half. Grand Canyon scored on a penalty kick, making the halftime score 3-1 in Holbrook’s favor. In the second half Grand Canyon held Holbrook scoreless, then tied the match with just three minutes remaining to force overtime. Throughout the first overtime neither team scored, but in the second extra session Andy Leon’s shot was mishandled by Grand Canyon’s keeper and Jesse Spangler sprinted in to knock in the eventual game winner.
On Saturday morning the teams met up again, but this time Holbrook had control throughout the match, winning it 4-0. Defensively the Roadrunners were stellar in the first half, not allowing the Phantoms a single shot on goal. Jaquez scored Holbrook’s first goal on a breakaway play. Alvarado later scored on a left footed shot, giving Holbrook a 2-0 halftime lead. In the second half Alvarado added his second goal just seven minutes into the action. Tambre scored in the late stages of the match, closing the scoring.
Standout players for Holbrook in the match included Levi Reyes, Alvarado, Javier Quintana, Leon, Jaquez, Gabe Andis and Spangler.
With the win the Roadrunners improved to 3-4 in power point contests. They will travel to Eagar on Saturday, Oct. 1, to face the Round Valley Elks in the dome.
