The Winslow High School cross country teams performed well at the Bud Davis Invitational Meet held Oct. 14 at Tuba City. The boys’ varsity team was especially successful, finishing second overall.
All six Bulldog runners earned a top 30 finish: Cody Sangster took seventh; John Hoskie, eighth; Kevin Decker, 20th; Lorin Greenwood, 21st; Milland Thomas, 23rd; and Matt Honvantewa, 30th. The race drew 64 runners.
Tuba City took home the first place trophy with only 19 team points, followed by Winslow with 79; and Many Farms with 89. Chinle took fourth; Monument Valley, fifth; Ganado, sixth; Chino Valley, seventh; Red Mesa, eighth; and Valley Sanders, ninth. Greyhills, St. Michael and Rock Point ran incomplete teams.
Winslow’s Aaliyah Lewis came across the line in a time of 23:41, good for ninth place in the girls’ division. Danielle Dickson finished in 26:10 for 30th. Avrial Sheffer took 40th in 27:36. Nicole Lee and Kiyanna Honani rounded off the Lady Bulldogs’ top five. As a team, Winslow took sixth overall, ahead of two sectional rivals, Chino Valley in seventh place and Monument Valley in eighth.
Tuba City won the event with Chinle taking second; Ganado, third; Valley Sanders, fourth; and Many Farms, fifth.
In the junior varsity boys’ race two Winslow runners brought home medals. Andre Guye finished 14th in a time of 21:28, and DeSean Spencer finished 15th overall in a time of 21:10. The other jayvee scorers were Trevor Begay, 21st place; Tylon Yazzie, 22nd; and Kelby Moore, 31st. The Bulldogs took third as a team behind the winning Tuba City and Chinle.
Gabby Yazzie was the only competitor from Winslow High School in the junior varsity girls’ race. She ran a time of 29:37 and finished 26th overall.
The cross country teams are slated to participate in the Holbrook Invitational today (Oct. 21), followed by the sectional meet also on Friday, Oct. 28, at Holbrook and the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 5, at a place to be announced later.
