Competing at the Alchesay Invitational Tournament on Oct. 21 in Whiteriver, the Holbrook High School chess team came home with positive results.
Justin Tapaha earned a medal for the biggest upset when he beat a player rated much higher than he was. Aarick Yazzie placed fourth at the junior varsity level with a 4-1 overall record. Not a single Holbrook player left the tournament without at least one win, and Dewayne John earned two varsity points.
The Holbrook squad is preparing for the Tuba City Individual Qualifying Tournament slated this weekend. The top ranking player from this tournament will go on to represent the Northern Region at the state tournament at Barry Goldwater High School in Phoenix.
