The Winslow High School cross country teams participated in the Holbrook Invitational Meet last Friday at Hidden Cove Golf Course and will participate in the Sectional Meet scheduled today (Oct. 28) on the same course. The Winslow boys finished ninth among 19 teams, while the Winslow girls were 11th among 19 teams. Chinle won both the boys’ and girls’ competition, while Hopi took second in both events. Zuni was third in the boys’ meet, with Pusch Ridge Christian placing third in the girls’ meet.
The top three finishers in the boys’ varsity race were Johnathan Yazzie of Chinle in 16:28, Searle Tracy, also of Chinle, in 16:42 and Domonic Sinquah of Hopi in 16:43.
The top three finishers in the girls’ varsity race were Rolonda Jumbo of Chinle in 18:52, Kailee Birdinground of Tuba City in 20:32 and Sarah MacDonald of Pusch Ridge in 20:45.
For the Winslow varsity boys, Cody Sangster took 13th place with a solid time of 17:42. Milland Thomas (18:39), Lorin Greenwood (18:46), John Hoskie (19:30) and Matt Honvantewa (19:40) rounded out the Bulldogs’ top five. Sophomore Kevin Decker was out this week with a collarbone injury, but Winslow is hopeful for his return at sectionals.
For the Winslow varsity girls, Aaliyah Lewis took 19th in a time of 21:58. Rachel Montoya was the second Bulldog finisher in a time of 22:36. Danielle Dickson was 80th overall in a time of 24:56, followed by Stasha Bahe (25:06), Avrial Sheffer (25:07) and Nicole Lee (25:33).
In the boys’ junior varsity race, DeSean Spencer ran a great race for Winslow. He took fourth place in a time of 19:00, and will move into the varsity lineup for sectionals. Andre Guye took 33rd in a time of 20:29.
In the girls’ junior varsity competition, Michelle Crowfeather was the top finisher from Winslow High School in a time of 25:02. She will return to the varsity lineup today.
The top half of the teams in each sectional meet will advance to the state meet along with the top 25 individuals.
