Hosting the state qualifying Division III boys’ and Division IV girls’ cross country race on Friday afternoon at Hidden Cove Golf Course, Holbrook had one runner and one team qualify for the state meet this weekend.
The Holbrook boys’ team had to compete in the Division III race, where only Melcomh Chee finished high enough to advance to the state meet. Che’s finishing time of 17:30 was good enough for 18th place in a field of 86 runners. Only the top 20 individual runners earned a trip to state.
Kyle Chee finished in 34th place with a time of 18:04. Bryson Keoni was 38th in 18:18. Theriot Yazzie placed 46th in 18:35. Mark Clark was 50th in 18:43. Marcos Clark placed 55th in 18:56. Cody Chee was 61st in 19:29.
Chinle’s Johnathan Yazzie won the meet with a time of 16:28. Mathew Murray of Tuba City was second, followed by Searle Tracy of Chinle in third.
The top five teams also advanced to the state meet. Chinle was first with 48 followed by Tuba City with 53; Mingus, 90; Page, 102; and Blue Ridge. 129. Holbrook finished in eighth place with a team score of 186.
Competing in the girls’ Division IV meet Holbrook qualified as a team, placing fourth with 131 team points. Hopi won the team title with 41 points, followed by Northland Prep with 73 and Sedona with 110.
Individually, Holbrook was paced by Col’Bi Nez, who finished 11th with a time of 21:40. Miya Tom was 15th in 22:04, followed by Tamisha Yazzie, 29th in 23:29; Latanya Lano, 42nd in 24:24; Amber Yazzie, 44th in 24:33; and Charmayne Yazzie, 50th in 25:11. Seventy-four runners competed in the state qualifying meet.
Melcomh Chee and the entire girls’ team will run in their respective state cross country meets on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.
