Needing to win their final regular season match on Senior Night to qualify for the Division IV State Volleyball Tournament, the Lady Roadrunners came up with a huge performance, shutting out visiting Ganado in three games to reach the post-season. In the process, Holbrook dashed Ganado’s hopes of a state tourney berth.

With a good crowd in attendance the Lady Roadrunners surged to the lead early in each of the three games, winning them 25-23, 25-17 and 25-13. Holbrook played solid defense and attacked the net, getting strong performances from hitters Bethany Baldwin and Tess Baldonado, who combined for 30 kills in three games.

Coach Leslie Baldonado has a veteran team this year with eight seniors on the 12-member varsity squad. Two other seniors, Erin Aragon and Sharon Young, who were both injured prior to the first match of the year, were recognized along with Maria Garcia, Aaren LaRose, Janecia Nez, Kellin Bakurza, Tiffany Haskie, Shantina Kinlicheenie, Bethany Baldwin and Tamika Baldwin.

In the match, Garcia, who was playing Libero, finished with 16 digs. LaRose added five kills, served three aces, and had one assist and 13 digs. Nez finished with one kill, one assist and four digs. Bakurza played well with 17 assists and 18 digs. Haskie added one dig. Kinlicheenie finished with three kills, 16 assists and 11 digs. Bethany Baldwin put down 18 kills, and had one block, one assist and six digs. Tamika Baldwin helped with 5 assists.

Samantha Smith had one kill. Shandie Demuth finished with one kill, two assists and one dig. Corazon Alvarado added three kills and six digs. Baldonado was big at the net with 12 kills, one block, two aces and three digs.

Holbrook has only played two regular season matches against Division IV competition this season and heads into the state tournament field as the 15th overall seed. The Lady Birds will face second seeded Willcox at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. The Lady Cowboys posted a solid record of 13-4 during the season, with two of those losses coming against top ranked Thatcher. If the Lady Birds can upset Willcox, they will face either seventh seeded Parker or 10th seeded Valley Christian in second round action at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.
