The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office building located at 137 West Arizona Street sustained damage on Thursday, Nov. 24, after an alleged drunk driver collided with another vehicle in the parking lot, pushing it into the building.
At approximately 12:45 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call from an off duty Arizona Department of Corrections (DOC) Officer, who reported he was following a possible drunk driver in a white Ford truck traveling northbound on State Highway 77, coming into Holbrook.
A deputy observed a vehicle matching the description driving northbound through the intersection of Navajo Blvd. and Hopi Drive when the Ford pickup turned westbound into the employee parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office and continued driving west, colliding with a parked county vehicle. The collision forced the county vehicle into the southeast side of the building. The driver of the truck backed out and drove around the site of the collision, where he was stopped by the deputy.
After conducting an investigation, deputies determined the driver, Cory Francis Ekstrand, 23, of Winslow, was driving under the influence. According to the Sheriff’s Office, testing revealed Ekstrand had a blood alcohol content of .27 percent, over three times the legal limit. Ekstrand was charged with criminal damage, DUI and extreme DUI. He was booked into the Navajo County Jail where he was later released on a $2,500 bond.
The Sheriff’s office building sustained structural damage to the exterior wall, interior restroom and plumbing system. The county vehicle sustained extensive body damage. No one was injured in the accident and no services were interrupted.
