A White Mountain Lake man has been arrested following a stabbing incident that left another man dead. At approximately 10:40 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, Navajo County Sheriff’s deputies made a welfare check at a home at 8350 Weber Road in White Mountain Lake. Deputies discovered a man lying dead on the floor, the victim of multiple stab wounds to the torso. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Jeffery Dean Durham, a resident of the home.
Detectives from the Navajo County Joint Homicide Investigation Task Force were activated to assist in the investigation. Detectives responded from the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, the Holbrook Police Department, the Snowflake-Taylor Police Department, the Show Low Police Department, the Pinetop-Lakeside Police Department and the Navajo County Attorney’s Office.
During the investigation, detectives discovered the suspect, Jose Luis Valencia, 27, Durham’s roommate, had been in an altercation with Durham the night before and fled the area. Deputies searched the area and found Valencia walking along Silver Creek Canyon off of Snyder Circle, where he was then taken into custody.
Valencia was booked into the Navajo County Jail for first-degree homicide and is being held on a no bond order from the Show Low Justice Court.
Sheriff KC Clark noted that there are no other suspects in the murder.
