Arizona St. in Holbrook, and will be preceded by the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. The committal service and inurnment will immediately follow Mass at the Holbrook Cemetery. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather at a reception that will begin at 12 noon at the family center across the street from the church.

Petra Baca was born Feb. 22, 1929, in El Tule, Ariz., to the late Jose and Teresa Baca. She was raised in St. Johns, and graduated from St. Johns High School. In her quest for education, Petra attended Siena Heights University Convent, where she studied to be a nun. She was accompanied by her sister, Viola. It was cut short in her second year when they returned home to care for their mother.

She met her future husband, Eloy, in St. Johns, and married him on May 21, 1955. Soon after, they moved to Holbrook to start raising a family and make it their hometown.

Petra worked at St. Johns Hospital and Holbrook Hospital for a number of years, and also enjoyed being a teacher’s aide at Hulet Elementary School. These employment opportunities helped give her a diversity of talents that she shared throughout the years with her family and friends.

She also coached her sons’ softball teams (she’d even pick up kids in the old Studebaker truck) and helped coach her daughter’s team.

Petra enjoyed her friends, and you were never a stranger, in conversation. She dearly loved her family, her grandchildren, laughter, sewing, upholstery, cooking, baking, gardening, singing, dancing, watching sports, visiting family, driving and going out on the town with her husband. It has often been said that Petra had a style about her.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Eloy; her beloved children, Timothy (Joan) Salazar of Encinitas, Calif., Peter (Susan) Salazar of Seattle, Wash., and Margaret Seguirant of Kailua, Hawaii; her wonderful grandchildren, Teresa Salazar, Adrian Salazar, Matthew Salazar, Monica Salazar, Natalie Salazar and Daniel Seguirant; her honorary grandchildren, Kimberley Anselmo, Randall Anselmo and Logan Anselmo; four sisters, Rosa Garcia, Viola Valdivia, Erlinda Salazar and Patricia (Lupe) Tafoya; two brothers, Fred (Velma) Baca and Reggie (Barbara) Baca; her beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and longtime family friends from Holbrook, St. Johns and the surrounding areas.

She was preceded in death by her sister and brothers, Flora Garcia, Andres Baca, Rumaldo Baca, Aresteo Baca and Senito Baca.

Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook was in charge of the arrangements.
