The Roadrunners split their two matches on last Wednesday at the St. Johns multiple wrestling meet. The Holbrook squad defeated Show Low, 48-24, then fell to a very good St. Johns team 50-10 in the three way meet.
Facing the Cougars, Drew Shumway won a close 4-2 decision at 138 against Rusty Allen. Ronald Justman pinned Terrance Bridges in the 160 division. James Self won a major decision at 11-0 over Jace Wyatt in the 170 class. Reuben Kee pinned his opponent, Thomas Williams in just 15 seconds in the 220 pound division.
RJ Alvarado, Kevin Self, Shem Bowman, Nikko Ferniza and Mathew Gishi all won by forfeit.
Caleb McClellan was pinned by Albert Ryan in the 113 class. Shawn Gillespie was pinned by John Clark in the 145 division.
Facing the host team Redskins, the Birds didn’t have quite as much success.
McClellan, Gillespie, Lanny Newton-Pender, Justman and Gishi were all pinned by their opponents. James Self, Bowman and Ferniza all lost in points.
Only three Roadrunners picked up wins against St. Johns, which was coming off a team win at the Doc Wright Invitational the previous weekend. Alvarado earned a major decision 14-3 win over Rayne Raykovitz in the 132 class. Shumway earned a close 3-2 win over Tyler Crosby in the 138 division. and Kee won his match over Chanden Herring by a final of 5-3 in the 220 pound class.
“Our guys did well against some of the top ranked wrestlers in our division. Drew had a great match against Crosby to win 3-2. James lost a hear breaker to Austin Davis by a single point at 4-5. Reuben redeemed his loss from earlier in the year and defeated Herring of St. Johns 5-3,” said Coach John Bokker.
Holbrook will host a multiple meet tonight (Jan. 25) at Muñoz Gym.
