Snowflake’s Lady Lobos played well in two close losses, then performed even better in their lone win last week, making their power point record 5-7 heading into this week’s action.
Hosting Alchesay on Tuesday, the Lady Lobos nearly matched the Lady Falcons point for point until a cold shooting stretch at the end of the game cost them a chance for an upset win over a squad that was 8-0 in power point contests.
“We did a good job and the girls played well. We missed our final eight shots, some of them from close range in the final minutes, which could have given us a chance to pull the upset. I thought the girls played much better than we have been in the past couple of weeks and seemed to play more relaxed,” said Coach Don Godfrey.
The Lady Lobos trailed by just one at the half and by three at the end of the third. They just couldn’t quite get over the top in the fourth, and took the 42-38 home court loss.
Lisha Titus, who played well all week, led the team in scoring with 12 points. Tandis Yellowhair added 8; Brylee Coplan and Caitlin Christensen, 6 each; Katie Larson, 4; and Mattie Scott, 2.
Snowflake made five of 12 free throws, and had 21 steals and 20 turnovers.
“The next night at Payson we really got things rolling in what was a very physical game,” said Coach Godfrey.
Snowflake took a four-point lead into the second period, then pushed that margin to 14 at the half. The Lady Lobos battled through some physical play and led by 10 going into the final period. They won the game 70-56.
“This was a tough game; there were technicals and intentional fouls called, and we ended up shooting 33 free throws. Our girls did a good job in keeping their composure for the most part and we ended up getting a good win,” added the coach.
Titus led the squad with 16 points. Yellowhair added 15; Coplan and Tara Nezzie, 9 each; Larson, 8; Scott, 7; and Christensen, 6.
Snowflake made just 12 of those 33 charity attempts and came away with 20 steals, but countered that with 21 turnovers.
On Friday night the Lady Lobos played host to Joseph City and dropped a hard fought battle, 51-46. Snowflake led by one at the half, but had a tough time with Joseph City down the stretch. The Lady Lobos were up by a couple of buckets late in the game, but let the lead slip away.
Titus again led in scoring with 14. Yellowhair added 10 with nine rebounds. Nezzie and Coplan scored 6 points each; Christensen and Larson, 4 each; and Devrie Woodside, 2.
Snowflake made just four of 10 free throw attempts, and had 14 steals and 15 turnovers.
After hosting Show Low on Tuesday, the Lady Lobos will travel to Holbrook on Friday, Jan. 27, then return to the road on Saturday when they travel to Eagar, where they will face Round Valley. Next Tuesday they will start their final week of the regular season with a rematch game at Joseph City.
