It didn’t take the Roadrunners long to show why they are the top ranked team in Division IV as they pounded 16th seed Safford 67-32 in the second round of the state tournament in Flagstaff on Friday night.
Torrian Epps outscored Safford by himself in the first half, netting 23 points. The Bulldogs had no answer for Epps or the rest of Holbrook’s squad from early on.
In the second half Dakota Lester nailed a pair of treys and Jalen Jackson helped with five points. With the outcome already determined, neither team did much in the final quarter, but Holbrook easily cruised to the quarter final round with the big win.
Epps finished the night with a game high 26 points, which included four three-point shots. Jackson added 12; Lester, 9; Bryson Keoni, 5; Rashaun Baldwin and Frank Martin, 4 each; Ryan Baldonado, 3; and Seth Hadley and Sheldon Silversmith, 2 each. Holbrook made eight three-point shots and went three for six at the free throw line.
Safford was led by Jordan Davis with 11. Desmond Andrews and Rashaun Langford added 6 each; Cole Claridge and James Holguin, 4 each; and Weston Wiltbank, 1. The Bulldogs made one three-point shot and went three for seven at the line.
Safford 8 12 11 1 32
Holbrook 14 27 20 6 67
With the win the Roadrunners improved to 32-3 on the season. If they were able to get past the eighth seeded North Pointe Falcons and their seven foot sophomore center on Monday at Prescott Valley, they would return to Glendale to face either Rio Rico or Thatcher in the semifinal round at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. A win in that round would put them back into the championship game on Saturday night.
