The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Valley Christian Lady Trojans 49-35 in Prescott on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Arizona Division III State Girls’ Basketball Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will meet their longtime rivals, the Tuba City Lady Warriors, at 2:45 p.m. today (Feb. 24) at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale. Tuba City bested Window Rock 50-42 to earn a berth in the semifinals.
The Lady Bulldogs started extremely slowly in a first quarter that saw each team plagued with turnovers. Valley Christian scored the first eight points and the quarter was more than half over before Winslow scored. The Lady Trojans led 8-4 after the first quarter, but Winslow had an 11-10 lead two minutes into the second period.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored Valley Christian 22-8 in the second quarter and held a 26-16 lead at the intermission. The margin was 37-24 after three quarters and Winslow maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the contest.
Mattea Begaii and Corey Nez led the Winslow attack with 14 points each. Begaii scored 12 of her total in the first half. Halle Hayes and Nez controlled the boards for the Lady Bulldogs.
Tana Kemmer of Valley Christian took game high honors with 17 points as she connected on five three-point shots. Logan Philippe scored nine points for the Lady Trojans.
The win improved Winslow’s record to 23-5 for the season and ended Valley Christian’s season with a very impressive 29-3 record.
