The Winslow Bulldog baseball team got off to a good start on the season by winning three of four games at the Fountain Hills Tournament late last week. Winslow bested Bourgade Catholic, 9-8, and Northwest Christian, 9-6, on Thursday, lost to Payson, 12-3, on Friday and shut out Fountain Hills, 6-0, on Saturday.
In the 9-8 Winslow win, Bourgade Catholic had built an 8-0 lead over Winslow after 3½ innings of play only to see the Bulldogs score twice in the bottom of the fourth, twice more in the bottom of the sixth and four times in the seventh for the win. Aaron Martin started on the mound, but Jon Oso got the win in relief, working a pair of shutout innings. Matthew Smith was two for two at the plate with a double. Chris Garrett was also two for two. Vincenzio Sells was one for two. Martin was one for four and Colton Corum was one for five.
In the 6-4 win over Northwest Christian, the teams were tied at 1-1 after the first inning, but Northwest Christian took a 4-1 lead in the third inning. Winslow scored five times in the fifth and final inning to win the game. There was a time limit in effect in the tournament. Garrett got the win in relief of Jon Bollin with 22/3 scoreless innings of work. Martin was two for two with a double and a triple. Adrian Montoya was two for three. Chad LaPointe was one for one. Smith was one for two with a double. Bollin and Vittorio Sells were also one for two. Corum was one for three.
In the 12-3 loss to Payson, Payson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Winslow tied the score in the second only to fall behind 8-3 in the third. Payson added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The game was ended after Winslow failed to score in the sixth inning. Matt Cirre, Corum and Sam Setalla worked on the mound for Winslow. Smith and Garrett were each two for three with a double. Vittorio Sells was one for three.
In the 6-0 win over Fountain Hills, Caleb Layden worked four scoreless innings for the win, giving up just one hit and a walk. Oso worked the last two innings and gave up four walks. Smith was three for three with a pair of doubles. Montoya was two for three. Garrett was two for four and Vittorio Sells was one for three.
The Bulldogs were slated to play at Holbrook on Thursday. They will host Blue Ridge at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8.
