Ray Nelson, 91, passed away on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock this morning (March 2) at Hallelujah Canyon Church, with interment to follow at Indian Wells Community Cemetery.
He was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Rainbow Springs. His clans were Na nesh tezhi tabáháá born for Tsen jikini. His nali was Tó tsóh ni, and his chei was Tó dichinii.
Ray was a well known medicine man. He worked at Bellemont for 10 years from 1940 to 1952 doing ammunition loading for the military and worked for Santa Fe Railroad for two years.
He enjoyed horseback riding and sheep herding. He also liked working with scrap metal pieces as a hobby.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Thomas Nelson of Na ah tee Canyon; brothers, Pete Nez and Joe B. Nelson, both of White Cone; two sons, Jerry Nelson of Holbrook and Roy Nelson of White Cone; three stepsons, Samuel Thomas, Gilbert Park Thomas and Gary Cooper Thomas; three stepdaughters, Kary Begay, Sarah Jim and Ella Mae Bitsue; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Slim Nez, and mother, Emma Nez; brothers Joseph Nelson and John Bahe; sister Mary John; one unknown brother; and one unknown sister.
Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow was in charge of the arrangements.
