Though they were hoping to stay in the top eight in the power point rankings in order to receive a first round bye in the state tournament, the Roadrunners suffered a bit of a setback Tuesday afternoon when they lost 8-4 at St. Johns.
The Birds started well enough with two first inning runs, then gave those back in the home half of the opening frame. Holbrook regained the lead, scoring once in the third inning, but in the bottom of the third St. Johns took control of the game. The Redskins scored six times in the third, giving themselves a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Holbrook scored just once more in the fifth.
Ryan Baldonado pitched all six innings for Holbrook, facing 31 batters. He gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
At the plate, Michael Kennedy was one for four with a double. Dylan Barela was one for three and scored once. Jesse Spangler was one for four and scored once. Levi Reyes was one for two with a double and scored twice. Baldonado was one for two with an RBI. Shawn Gillespie was one for three with an RBI.
With just two regular season games remaining on the schedule, Holbrook may now need victories in both to earn that first round bye. The Roadrunners headed into Thursday’s final home contest against Blue Ridge with an overall mark of 14-10. In power point games they were 11-4. On Tuesday they will travel to Snowflake for a matchup with the Lobos in the regular season finale. Both teams will head to the Division III State Playoffs.
