By Greg Perkins —
Hoping to win their final regular season game to have an outside chance of moving into the top eight in power points and receive a first round bye, the Roadrunners battled tough in Snowflake on Tuesday afternoon forcing extra innings before falling 9-8 to the Lobos.
Both teams played well early, with the Birds opening the game in fine form scoring two first inning runs. Not to be outdone, the host team caught and passed Holbrook with four in the bottom of the first to lead by two. In the top of the second, Holbrook scored three runs moving back on top only to be tied with a Snowflake run in the bottom of the second.
Neither team scored in the third, so Snowflake’s two runs in the fourth gave them a short-lived two run cushion. Holbrook came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth knotting the game once again at 7-7. The next two innings went by without any runs, forcing an eighth frame, where Holbrook took the lead scoring once to edge in front 8-7. In the bottom of the eighth, the Lobos closed out the game scoring twice to win 9-8 and end Holbrook’s chance at a first round bye in the state tournament.
Holbrook collected 11 hits in the game but allowed 13 to Snowflake. Both teams made two errors. Holbrook wraps up their regular season with an overall mark of 14-12 while Snowflake finished 14-10. In power point contests the Roadrunners finished 11-6. The Lobos were 12-5 with one game against Show Low remaining.
Holbrook and Snowflake will now have nearly a week off to prepare for the state tournament which gets underway on Tuesday at the Surprise Baseball Complex. The pairings for the opening round won’t be known until Friday.
