A Thousand Oaks, Calif., woman was killed and her husband was in serious condition following a plane crash that occurred near Winslow last Wednesday. The incident happened at approximately 12:41 p.m. on July 11, when the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a plane crash just west of the Winslow-Lindbergh Regional Airport.
The California couple was identified as pilot Joe Tischler, 65, and his wife Sandee Tischler, 62. They were on their way to Flagstaff when their 2005 Cozy-Canard III crashed in a vacant field shortly after takeoff from the airport. Both were air evacuated to Flagstaff Medical Center, where Mrs. Tischler died shortly after her arrival.
The initial investigation revealed that the Tischlers had stopped for fuel and lunch around 11 a.m. at the Winslow Airport before resuming their flight. The pilot took off from the airport and a short time later crashed in a field not far from the end of the runway.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Na-tional Transportation Safety Board.
