Joan Haydukovich, 79, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 21, 2012. Holy Rosary will be held at 7 o’clock tonight (July 25) at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winslow. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, at the church, with Father Frank Chacon officiating. Interment will follow service at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
Joan was born on Sept. 15, 1932, in Santa Fe, N.M., and lived at the Ghost Ranch until the Depression brought her parents to Winslow.
She attended Winslow High School, graduating in 1950. She attended Teachers College in Flagstaff (now Northern Arizona University) and St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Phoenix from September 1951 to 1952.
Joan married Mike on Sept. 22, 1953, and began an adventurous life as the wife of an Air Force pilot. Her nursing background helped her raise 10 children, five boys and five girls.
Her claim to fame was being a Harvey Girl at La Posada. She has been interviewed by the BBC and Ari-zona Highways for her place in history as a Harvey Girl.
Joan was also an artist. She loved quilting and was an avid reader.
She was a devout Irish Catholic who left us all the beautiful gift of faith. She will be forever in our hearts.
Joan was a devoted wife for 59 years to Mike Haydukovich, and beloved mother of 10 children, Mary
(Jim) Kriste, Brenda (John) Daly, Mark (Susan) Haydukovich, John (Elizabeth) Haydukovich, Jeanne (Mark) Oliva, Amy (Mack) Rhoades, Lori (Greg) Reents, Thomas Haydukovich, Steven (Darci) Haydukovich and Paul (Geeia) Haydukovich. She was the adored grandmother of 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Jeanne Leonard, and her brother, Lawrence Ma-cLean.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Norman “Sandy” MacLean; and her brother, Dan MacLean.
