Holbrook Coach Dave Wright has a mixture of old and new on his varsity roster for the upcoming soccer season. Freshmen expected to see time on the varsity squad include Noah Barela, Joe Herrera, Trevor Barton, Brandon Kester and James Ramirez. They are joined by seniors and returning lettermen Gabe Andis, Jacob Baker, Shawn Gillespie, Andy Leon, Nate Turley and Jesse Spangler. Others with varsity experience from last year include Carlos Quintana, Duncan Henson, and Caleb McClellan.
Thirty boys are in the soccer program this year, as the previously mentioned players are joined by Christian Young, Trey White, Jordan Smith, Alec Smith, Olin Roan and Jesus Luna. Caleb DeJesus will also rejoin the team once he has recovered from an injury.
Holbrook faced Round Valley in a scrimmage contest last Saturday, where Coach Wright saw several good things from his team.
“Noah (Barela) had a great header off a corner to score. Jesse (Spangler) scored on a breakaway and Joe (Herrera) added two goals for us. I was also pleased with the play of freshman Trevor Barton on the defensive end of the field. Brandon Kester also gave us solid minutes at midfield. James Ramirez played well at for-ward and combined with Carlos Quintana in goal to shut out the Elks,” said the coach. “We are excited to have 12 freshmen out this season along with all the returning lettermen, who will give us valuable contributions. This year’s team will be a combination of seniors and freshmen as they strive to continue the Roadrunners’ winning ways.”
Holbrook will open the season on Thursday, Aug. 30, with a home match against Snowflake. On Tuesday, Sept. 4, they begin a stretch of three straight road matches with a trip to Northland Prep in Flagstaff, followed by matches at Show Low on Sept. 6 and Blue Ridge on Sept. 8.
