The Winslow Bulldogs opened their 2012 season with a 52-7 victory over the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions on the road last Friday.
Kelly Wood scored on a 75-yard run on the second play of the game. Jonathan Oso booted the conversion for a 7-0 Winslow lead.
Oso scored a touchdown on a one-yard run on Winslow’s next possession, but missed the conversion, leaving the Bulldogs with a 13-0 advantage.
Sedona’s Luis Robles intercepted a Winslow pass and the Scorpions drove 39 yards and scored on a 10-yard run by Franz Kennan. Max Houseman converted to cut the Winslow lead to 13-7.
Wood ran 80 yards for his second touchdown of the game. A conversion pass failed and Winslow led 19-7.
A snap over the Sedona punter gave the Bulldogs the ball on the Sedona 12 yard line and James Martinez scored from a yard out. The conversion kick was blocked, but Winslow still held an impressive edge with the score at 25-7.
Rod Cleveland picked off a Scorpion pass and ran 30 yards for the final score of the first quarter, which Winslow led 31-7 after the conversion kick was blocked.
Henry Montiel ran 87 yards to score on Winslow’s next possession. The conversion kick increased the lead to 38-7.
James Martinez hit Shane Sweet with a 63-yard pass for the next Winslow touchdown. The conversion gave the Bulldogs a 45-7 halftime lead.
Oso scored on a seven-yard run for Winslow’s first score of the second half. The conversion increased the lead to 52-7. That was the only score of the second half, which was mostly played with a running clock due to the command-ing lead. Winslow played its entire bench most of the second half.
The Bulldogs will be on the road again on Friday, Aug. 31, when they journey to Holbrook to meet the Roadrun-ners. Holbrook lost 54-7 to a tough Snowflake team last Friday.
