The Winslow Junior High School seventh grade football team defeated their counterparts from Blue Ridge 36-14 on the home field last Wednesday in the first game of the season for any Winslow team.
Michael Bonner scored the young Bulldogs’ first touchdown on a two-yard run. Blue Ridge tied the game at 6-6 on a three-yard run by Cody Thomas. Darren Brown scored on a 45-yard run to put Winslow back on top 14-6 after Audie Foster ran for a two-point conversion.
The Bulldogs picked up steam in the second half as Justin Betoney ran 40 yards for a touchdown and two more for the two-point conversion and a 22-6 lead. A 40-yard scoring run by Bonner increased the lead to 30-6. Blue Ridge scored on a 35-yard pass with around two minutes left and completed a pass for the two-point conversion to cut the margin to 30-14. Darren Brown picked off a Blue Ridge pass and returned it 60 yards for the final score of the game.
The next day, the WJHS eighth grade team defeated Joseph City 16-8 in a game played in Winslow. Nick Marquez scored on a 10-yard run late in the second quarter and Quentin Begody ran for the two-point conver-sion and an 8-0 Bulldog lead.
Both teams scored in the final minutes of play. Zach Hartnett ran five yards for Winslow’s score and Be-gody again ran for the two-point conversion and a 16-0 lead. Troy Poudrier scored for Joseph City on a 20-yard run with just two seconds left in the game, then ran for the two-point conversion that made the final score 16-8.
The Winslow seventh graders are slated to play St. Johns this afternoon (Aug. 29) at home, and the eighth graders will play at Show Low on Thursday, Aug. 30.
