The Winslow seventh grade football team defeated St. Johns 26-12 in a game played Aug. 29 in Winslow. This was the young Bulldogs’ second win in as many games.
After a scoreless first quarter, St. Johns took a 6-0 lead on a 60-yard run. Winslow tied the score at 6-6 on a 44-yard run by Mikell Bonner. Neither conversion run was good.
Winslow went up 12-6 early in the second half on a 13-yard run by Preston Betoney. Again the conversion attempt failed. St. Johns got that score back on the very next play with a 75-yard kickoff return, but the Redskins, too, failed to convert and the score was tied at 12-12. Jalen Lyons scored for Winslow on the last play of the third quarter and after another missed conversion, Winslow led 18-12.
The only scores in the fourth quarter came in the closing minutes when Bonner ran 36 yards for a touchdown and Betoney ran for a two-point conversion, leaving Winslow with a 26-12 win.
The Winslow seventh graders will play Round Valley today (Sept. 5) in Eagar. The eighth graders will host Blue Ridge on Thursday, Sept. 6.
