Winslow will host its tenth 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 2100 E. Second St. The new location is just west of Transcon Lane on Third and Second streets at the far east end of Winslow’s old Route 66 highway. Busses will shuttle people from the city council building beginning at 6 p.m.
This is a doubly special event because it is the first time it will be held at the new location of Winslow’s Trade Cen-ter columns. The old columns location did not allow for a public gathering since it was closely bordered by two streets. The new location is the site of the planned 9/11 Memorial Park, greatly increased in size and eventually having a sub-stantial parking area. This site will be an Arizona Destination when completed. There is no fee to attend.
The ceremony will include patriotic songs, the presentation of Flag, speeches, an invocation, Mary Alice and Brenda Hays singing, the Pledge of Allegiance, fire truck and EMS emergency vehicles, and recognition of volunteers who made the new location possible. Special guests will be Walmart truck drivers Allen Veley and Mike McBee, dispatch supervisor Bill Hudnall, and the truck they used to go to Staten Island, N.Y., where they obtained Winslow’s Twin Towers columns 10 years ago. Solo bagpiper Michael Neal McGee will come up from Phoenix to help commemorate the event, which will close with a fireworks display.
