The Winslow Centennial Committee and Winslow Historical Society continue celebrating the city’s history with “Nickel Night: How News Traveled Around Winslow,” scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Winslow Visitors Center/Hubbell Trading Post, 523 W. Second St. Presentations will be made by Winslow residents who have owned or worked for the city’s media outlets. Former freelance writer Janice Henling will talk about The Winslow Mail’s first 50 years, and former reporter Juanita Walters will talk about its last 50 years. Loy Englehardt will talk about his years at KINO radio, and other presenters will discuss the Reminder and the Scoop.
The Winslow Mail has a long and storied history in town, starting when J.F. Wallace moved his newspaper from St. Johns in 1894. Its many owners and publishers (and their starting year) include the Giragi brothers (1926), the Richards/Northern Arizona Printers & Publishers (1930), the Nagels (1965), the Bargers/Navajo County Publishers (1969) and the Soldwedels/Western Newspapers (1998). Sadly, Western Newspapers closed the 113-year-old Winslow Mail in 2007.
The Benham family began four generations of printing the Reminder in 1949. They sold it to Western Newspapers in 2002, which printed it until 2004.
Meanwhile, Gilbert and Rhena Martinez began the Scoop, which continues to run ads, birth announce-ments, obituaries, and other short news items three times a week.
Loy and Pat Englehardt bought KINO radio station with a partner and moved to Winslow in 1977. Loy continues to broadcast Country Western music, and to cover city and county news supplemented by syndicated state news from Arizona News Network and national news from CBS Radio. KINO also covers local city council meetings and sports, including football, basketball, girls’ basketball, baseball and softball.
This event is one of the Second Saturdays in Winslow, a yearlong series of programs that explore Win-slow’s diverse history in celebration of the Arizona State Centennial on Feb. 14, 2012. Go online to www.OldTrailsMuseum.org for the latest exhibit and program information.
