Competing at the 35th annual Ray Wherley Invitational meet in Prescott on Saturday gave Holbrook’s run-ners a chance to run against teams from the Valley area they don’t normally see. In the boys’ varsity race, Jack Rubenze and Mark Ruiz, both from Brophy College Prep, took the top two spots, with Rubenze crossing in 16:30. Jonathon Hall of Northland Prep was third in the 156-runner event.
Holbrook’s top finisher was Marcos Clark, who placed 43rd with a time of 18:05. Brother Mark Clark fin-ished two spots later in with a time of 18:07. Zach Tsosie was 95th in 19:22; Coy Begay, 101st in 19:40; Na-than Johnson, 123rd in 20:23; and Keaton Clark, 128th in 20:35.
In the junior varsity race, Alonzo Begay finished 55th, Kyle Baldwin was 59th and Quinlan Keoni was 76th.
Brophy Prep took the team title, followed by Mountain Ridge in second and Hopi in third.
In the girls’ varsity race, Col’Bi Nez once again paced the Holbrook team with a time of 17:39, placing her in 21st position in the field of 150 participants. Competing in her first meet of the season Miya Tom placed 57th with a time of 19:10.
In the junior varsity race, Tanisha Yazzie finished fifth in a field of 61 runners. Charmayne Yazzie was 19th; Morgan Zahne, 32nd; Jayne Sandoval, 33rd; and Patricia Mitchell finished 36th over the 3.1-mile course.
Catalina Foothills took the team title, followed by Arcadia in second and Hopi in third. Diana Garcia of Tempe won the varsity meet with a time of 16:14.
Both teams will return to Flagstaff on Saturday, Sept. 15, to compete in the Four Corners Invitational.
