Stuart “Stu” Szink, 79, passed away on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, in Flagstaff. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Holbrook Cemetery.
He was born July 14, 1933, in Phoenix.
Stuart was raised in Phoenix and graduated from North Phoenix High School in 1951.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and was stationed in Germany. While he was on leave in December 1955, he married Nancy (Whitfield) on New Year’s Eve. He was discharged from the Army the next September, and returned to Arizona.
He and Nancy moved to Tucson, where he attended the University of Arizona. They later returned to Phoenix, where he worked for Phoenix Title and Trust. They remained there for several years, during which time all three of their children came along. He was transferred to Holbrook in 1963 and went on to work for Trans America Title Company.
During the past 49 years in Holbrook, Stu managed Great Western Bank, Pender’s Laundry, worked for the Holbrook School District and then Hidden Cove Golf Course. Stu served on the Holbrook City council for two separate terms. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Elks Lodge, Masons and the Rotary Club. He also was involved in many youth activities such as Little League, where he was both a coach and an umpire.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; son Terry Szink, his wife Eva, and sons David and Ismail; daughters Jeannean Elson, her husband Phil and son Hunter West, and Shelby Briggs and her husband Kent; and sister Connie Wayland, her husband John and their children, Lance and Alison.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Holbrook First Step Workshop, 210 Third Ave., Holbrook, Ariz. 86025.
