The Roadrunner soccer team wrapped up the week still searching for its first varsity non-tournament win after falling to both Blue Ridge and Payson during Homecoming Week.
Facing a talented Yellowjacket squad Sept. 19, Holbrook fell behind early, eventually suffering a 12-0 shutout.
Playing in Payson the next day, the Birds gave up an early goal to the Longhorns, then played them even until giving up two goals late to trail 3-0 at the break. Coach Dave Wright’s team played hard through the sec-ond half, as well, despite allowing another three goals to result in a 6-0 shutout.
“Although we lost, Caleb McClellan had his best mach of the year for Holbrook. Carlos Quintana returned to the nets and made several outstanding saves. Micah and Levi stepped it up and showed some fine improvement on defense for us,” said the coach.
Holbrook won the junior varsity match by a final of 6-2. Sophomore Alec Smith picked up a hat trick in the win, netting three goals.
The coach also commended the efforts of other young players. “James Ramirez played well in goal. Jordan Foster earned his first goal of the season. Jordan Smith also found the nets for the first time. Jonathan Dawson was another player scoring his first goal. Angel Benitez and Robert Wheeler also played well. It was super to have our six goals scored by four different players,” noted Coach Wright.
