Johanna Hendrika Kor left this world at 89 years of age on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, in Holbrook.
She was born on March 13, 1923, in Amsterdam, Holland, to Christiaan Grimberg and Henderina Meeks, and had one brother, Christiaan.
Johanna was a beautiful woman with a quiet dignity that seemed to radiate from her and a gentleness that endeared her to all who knew her.
When she was 18, she met and fell deeply in love with Eildert Wolter Kor, who was three years her senior. At their first meeting Eildert pronounced that he would marry her and did so less than a year later on Sept. 16, 1942. The first years of their marriage were forged through the turmoil of World War II as the couple worked together to actively defy the Nazis by volunteering in the Dutch Underground. Once the war ended, they remained in Holland and raised their four children.
In 1956, Johanna and Eildert left their homeland and came to the United States to raise their family in San Diego, where two more children were born.
The couple shared a great love and after Eildert passed away in 1973, Johanna never sought the love of another man, often saying that she knew there would be no one else who could compare.
She spent the remainder of her life enjoying simple pleasures. She was an avid gardener and loved to crochet, solve crossword puzzles, and enjoy a good mystery, quality chocolate and the company of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even a great-great grandchild.
Johanna was very independent, and prided herself on living a simple and happy life.
Johanna and Eildert had six children, Albertina (Larry) Pate of Holbrook, Geert (Carol) Kor II of Many, La., Eildert Wolter Kor II of San Diego, Calif., Henderina (Patrick) McCollough of Ormond Beach, Fla., Karin (Tommy) Slade of Holbrook and Linda Kor-Fisher of Joseph City. She had 15 grandchildren, Walter (Martha) Pate, Christina (Earl) Castillo, Margaret Maxwell, Lester (Traci) Pate, Geert (Kristi) Kor III, Matthew (Mariann) Kor, Kelsey (Christine) Kor, Dustin Kor, Kristin (Shawn) Johnson, Kimberlie (Richard) Young, Rebecca Slade, Lauren Slade, Brandon Kor-Fisher, Talaina Kor-Fisher and Joshua Kor-Fisher. She also had 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eildert, and her son, Geert.
Johanna requested that there be no memorial held for her. Her ashes will be brought to rest with her husband’s re-mains in Alpine, Calif.
