The Lady Roadrunners picked up a much needed home court win over visiting Mogollon Tuesday evening. Heading into the final month of the season, Holbrook is currently on the outside of the top 16 in power rankings, and must break into that group to qualify for the state tournament. The Lady Birds came into this game off a solid showing at the Snowflake tournament held last weekend, going 4-0 in pool play, then posting a 1-2 mark in bracket play on Saturday.
In Tuesday’s matchup both teams started slowly, then Holbrook began to pull away, gaining a 15-11 ad-vantage before going on to win game one 25-16. The Lady Birds controlled the second game 25-14, then closed out the match by winning game three 25-11. With the win they moved to 4-7 in power point matches.
Teyah Goldtooth and Tess Baldonado continue to be Holbrook’s primary attack weapons. Goldtooth finished the match with 11 kills and Baldonado counted for 12. Corazona Alvarado added three, as did Auburn Dush. Tilly Kelly had two, while Shandie Demuth and Samantha Smith helped with one each. Demuth led the team in setting with 22 assists. Smith added four, Terrilyn Lester, two, and Baldonado had one.
Mogollon struggled with Holbrook serving throughout the match. The Lady Birds served 12 aces led by Demuth with five. Alvarado added four, and Baldonado, Demi Phaturos and Kelly each served one.
Goldtooth led the team in digs with 12 followed by Alvarado with eight; Phaturos, six; Demuth and Dush, three each; and Lester, one.
After hosting Blue Ridge on Thursday, the Lady Roadrunners will face Mogollon again on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Heber, then host Window Rock on Thursday, Oct. 4, in their final match before taking a week off for fall break.
