The Roadrunner soccer squad suffered a tough 3-1 loss at the hands of Round Valley on Saturday afternoon. Playing on their home field, the Birds fell behind at the 17 minute mark of the first half as the Elks scored off a misplayed header. Through the remaining 40 minutes neither team was able to find the mark, leaving Holbrook down just 1-0 at the half.
In the second frame Andy Leon and Joe Herrera combined to score off a header, apparently knotting the score, only to have the goal taken away due to an off sides call. At the 14- minute mark the Elks doubled their lead. Holbrook kept fighting and finally got on the board when sophomore Theron Johns took an assist from Alec Smith and beat the keeper, finding the back of the net. The Roadrunners continued to threaten, but were unable to score. Round Valley scored again in the closing minutes of the match, making the final 3-1 and leaving Holbrook winless in power point contests.
Carlos Quintana played well in goal with 10 saves.
Sitting at the bottom of the power point rankings the Roadrunners need to come to life in their final six matches if they entertain any thoughts of reaching the state playoffs. After playing at Snowflake on Tuesday, they will face St. Johns twice in three days. A home match on Thursday, Oct. 4, is to be followed by a road match at St. Johns on Saturday, Oct. 6. During fall break Holbrook will travel to Grand Canyon for a double-header on Friday, Oct. 12. If the Roadrunners fail to reach the state tournament, their final game will be on Thursday, Oct. 18, when they host Show Low.
