The Cougars defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 40-7 in their Homecoming Game Friday night in Show Low. The win was Show Low’s seventh in as many games while Winslow fell to 4-3 for the season.
The Cougars thoroughly dominated the first half on both offense and defense as they piled up huge chunks of yard-age running and passing, and held Winslow to about 60 yards total. Winslow had four turnovers in the half, two fum-bles and two interceptions.
Show Low scored on its first possessions with less than a minute played. Brett Van Winkle ran 68 yards for the touchdown and Donnie Barrago booted the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars drove 90 yards on their next possession and scored on a 16-yard pass from Colby Maxwell to Trevor Solomon on a clutch fourth down play. The conversion failed and Show Low led 13-0.
Winslow’s Henry Montiel gave the visitors something to cheer about with a long kickoff return for an apparent touchdown, but the play was voided by a holding penalty.
After the Cougars recovered a Winslow fumble Maxwell hit Solomon in the end zone again on a 20-yard pass. The conversion failed and Show Low led 19-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Winslow defense held the next Show Low threat at their 15 yard line, but lost the ball at the 20 on a fumble. Brice Rova ran 20 yards for the score and Solomon booted the conversion for a 26-0 lead. Barrago missed a 26-yard field goal attempt for the Cougars on the last play of the half.
Show Low’s hard running Dallin Crandall scored on a three-yard run late in the third quarter. Barrago’s conversion gave the Cougars a 33-0 lead going into the final period.
The Bulldogs drove 77 yards for their first score of the game, which came with just over seven minutes left to play. James Martinez passed nine yards to Kelly Wood for the touchdown, and Lucas Jordan booted the conversion that cut Show Low’s lead to 33-7.
A 67-yard kickoff return by Rova set up the final score of the game. Rova ran seven yards for the touchdown and Solomon’s conversion put the 40-7 final score on the board.
Winslow drove deep in the closing moments, but Jordan missed a 37-yard field goal attempt and Show Low walked off with the 40-7 victory.
The Bulldogs will host the Coconino Panthers on Friday, Oct. 12, in another game between playoff contenders. The Panthers defeated the Tuba City Warriors 54-0 at Tuba City last Friday to improve their record to 5-2 for the season.
