Hosting Window Rock last Wednesday in what was a critical game for them, the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners took the first two games of the match, then dropped the final three, bringing any state tournament hopes for this year to a close.
Holbrook played solid, taking the first game 25-16. The Lady Birds came from behind in the second to win it 25-23. Once again they found themselves trailing in the third, but still battled back before losing the game and their momentum, 25-22. Window Rock controlled the fourth game 25-18, then easily put away Holbrook in the fifth game, 15-5, leaving the Lady Roadrunners too far down in the power rankings to have a chance to reach the state tourney despite still having three matches left.
Tess Baldonado finished the match with 17 kills, one ace and 20 digs. Teyah Goldtooth had 14 kills, one ace, one assist and 17 digs. Shandie Demuth ended with two kills, 35 assists, three aces, and 20 digs. Corazon Alvarado added six kills, two assists, one ace and 19 digs. Samantha Smith helped with a kill, seven assists, an ace and nine digs. Terrilyn Lester had nine kills, an ace and 13 digs. Demi Phaturos ended with one assist and 14 digs. Auburn Dush added four digs and Tilly Kelly added a dig.
Holbrook has this week off due to fall break before returning to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 16, with a match at Joseph City. The Lady Birds’ final two matches will be at Winslow on Oct. 18 and at home against St. Johns on Oct. 23.
