The Lobo soccer team posted eight wins, just two losses and one tie in their last two weeks of action, which included matches in two tournaments.
Playing in the Show Low Tournament on Sept. 14 and 15, Snowflake picked up wins over St. Johns, 3-0, Show Low, 4-1 in overtime, and Grand Canyon, 7-0. The Lobos’ only loss came against Payson, losing 2-1 on a penalty kick. Scoring goals for Snowflake in the tournament were Kegan Kay with four, Dustin Shumway and Alan Pozos, three each, Landon Godfrey, two, and Drew Hudson and Ammon Dean, one each.
On Sept. 20 the Lobos faced a tough Northland Prep team, coming away with a hard fought 1-0 win. Adrean Begay broke a scoreless tie in the second half off an assist by Pozos in the 57th minute of play.
Snowflake fell to Blue Ridge in a tight match, losing 3-2, but marking the first time in the last six years that the Lobos have been able to score more than one goal against the Yellowjackets. Blue Ridge scored twice early in the match, but Shumway cut the lead in half with a goal in the 31st minute off an assist from Kay and God-frey. A well played second half went back and forth until the 67th minute when the Lobos tied the match as Taylor Cole sent Godfrey an excellent pass, allowing him to score from the top of the goal box. Blue Ridge scored a goal late in the match to secure the win. “Scoring two goals against them for the first time in six years our offense did an excellent job. The player of the game, though, was our goalie, Allen Perkins, who had a few fantastic saves keeping Blue Ridge’s score low,” said Coach Brian Weir.
On Sept. 26 the Lobos took down Show Low 2-1 in another well played game. Shumway scored an amazing goal off an assist by Jeff Hannon-Brookes to open the scoring.
“Dustin’s goal came from a chest trap, then he turned and shot into the upper left corner at the 32 minute mark,” added Coach Weir.
Show Low answered seven minutes later, tying the score at 1-1. In the second half both teams battled for possession until Shumway scored his second and the game’s decisive goal in the 59th minute off an assist from Austin Webster.
Playing in the Desert Christian Invitational in Tucson, the Lobos won three matches and came away with one tie. Snowflake started the tourney with a 1-1 tie against Camp Verde. The Lobos then defeated Willcox 5-0, St. Augustine 11-0 and St. Gregory 2-0.
Several players earned goals in the tourney. Kay, Perkins, Cooper Chee and Shumway scored two each, while Damon Gale, Godfrey, Dean, Luke Lewis, Brayan Garcia, Jordan Flake, Everett Lunt, Pozos and Matt Tenney scored one each.
