Needing at least a split in their final two regular season volleyball matches, the Lady Lobos came up with a big win over Safford last Tuesday, then fell to a tough Blue Ridge squad two days later, but still earned enough power points to qualify for the state tournament as the 13th overall seed.
The 3-1 win over a highly ranked Safford team gave the Lady Lobos a huge boost in the standings. Their loss to Blue Ridge, also by a 3-1 margin, didn’t really hurt them, due to the Lady Jackets having so many wins on the year, which benefited Snowflake in the rankings.
The Lady Lobos will face a very good fourth ranked Monument Valley team in the opening round of the Division III state tournament at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. The Lady Mustangs come in with a stellar mark of 15-2 on the season. Snowflake finished the season with 11 wins against seven losses. In their only meeting this year, Monument Valley beat Snowflake in two games at the Snowflake tournament.
If the Lady Lobos can upset the Lady Mustangs, they will face either No. 5 Cactus or No. 12 Florence in a second round match scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Friday. A loss in either match will bring their season to a close.
