The Roadrunners opened the new hardwood season with a 62-53 home court loss to Coconino Monday night. With a slew of new players on the varsity team, Coach Raul Mendoza has a very small lineup. Cocon-ino came in with much taller post players and that size difference took a toll late in the game. Holbrook kept the game close through three periods, trailing just 42-40 heading into the fourth. But in the final eight minutes the Panthers outscored Holbrook 20-13, pulling away late with the bulk of their scoring coming from the post players.
Holbrook hit three treys in the first helping to offset a 20-point quarter from the Panthers. In the second Holbrook made another three from distance, but those were their only field goals and they trailed by two at the half. Both teams fought an even battle in the third, but in the final minutes of the fourth the Panthers took the ball to the basket, using their size advantage to hand Holbrook an opening game loss.
Andon Hatch led Holbrook’s scorers with 15 points on five three-point shots. Marlin Martin scored nine, all in the final eight minutes. Kyle Chee added 8, Dontae Hollins, 7, Nathan Turley, 4, Robert Nelson and Sheldon Silversmith, 3 each, and Triston Zahne and Miireux Begaii, 2 each.
Holbrook hit nine two-point field goals and nine three-point shots. From the free throw line the Roadrunners converted eight of 11 attempts.
The Panthers did most of their damage inside the paint, with their post players counting for nearly two-thirds of their offense. Coconino hit three shots from distance and made seven of 15 free throws.
