The Winslow Bulldogs edged the Williams Vikings 63-59 in their season opener in Winslow Nov. 20.
The Bulldogs started strong and had a 21-13 lead after the first period of play. The margin remained eight points at the intermission, with Winslow leading 35-27. Williams cut the lead to 49-43 by the end of the third quarter and took the lead in the closing minutes of the game.
There were several key plays in the closing minutes of play. Williams took a one-point lead on what the Winslow coaches and fans thought was a shot counted that was released well after the foul had been called. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, Williams was called for a foul and a technical foul. Winslow made all four free throws and got the ball out of bounds. There were still several minutes left on the clock and the game was not decided, but that was the critical element in Winslow’s victory.
Jeff Brownlee of Williams led all scorers with 30 points on six two-point goals, four three-pointers and a six for six free throw performance. Alessandro Faddo with 14 points and Juaquin Selaz with 11 points were also in double figures for the Vikings.
Michael Goldtooth was the only Bulldog in double figures with 17 points. Winslow had 10 players score to only five Vikings in the scoring column. Lukas Shirley and Stevin Nelson each scored eight points for the Bulldogs.
